Reflection on the 1st half: A platform of a platform of a platform

Over the last 5 classes, we have discussed the underlying importance of a platform. What a platform is and how it is evolving. If I have to summarize the whole 1st half of the course into one phrase, it would be: "A platform of a platform of a platform"

Instead of going into details on the evolution of platform, I would like to present a bird's eye view / timeline of how the limits of a platform have evolved and will evolve.

Note: It is not an accurate chart. Just a fun scratchwork.

Year Platform

1980-1995 Computers, Telephone

1995-2007 All of the above + World Wide Web

2007-2010 All of the above + Smartphones, Tablets, RFids

2010-2020 All of the above + Power Grid, Transportation, Buildings, Healthcare

2020-2050 All of the above + Water, Security, Food and Cities

2050 Entire world

As we can easily understand from this course and our other experiences, internet started as a small DARPA initiative which then went onto connect all the computers in the world. Many thought that was unbelievable. If that is unbelievable, imagine what would happen if anything and everything that is present on this planet begin to communicate. I think the initial steps in that direction was already taken and going forward existing platforms will integrate into newer, larger platforms, just the way it happened in the past... only faster!

This whole thought strikes a philosophical thought; to begin with, god designed our planet is designed to be interconnected, the weather patterns, geographies, people, they all have been interconnected for a long time... today, powered by the technology created by himself, human seem to be all set to redefine the meaning of interconnectedness by connecting every single thing on the planet.

On that note, thank you Prof. Venkat. It has been a great class :-)
