Android is #1 in the US

Over the last six months Android has experienced explosive growth and overtaken the likes of Blackberry and Apple. Granted the iPhone is still the top selling single device, but this casts doubt as to if the iPhone can remain as a market leader for much longer. Moreover as Android is adapted to the tablet market, this calls into question analysts' predictions that Apple will dominate for years to come.

  1. :-) I can see you smiling.

Thatz an impressive feet by Android, gaining 18% market share in 8 months. I don't think Apple can do too much in keeping the smartphone market share with its closed platform. People need options. Meanwhile, however, Apple will be a market leader in a different segment, tablets ;-)
    Catch up Android!

  2. I agree with Sudhi that Apple could not keep leader position with its closed platform. The key reason Andriod is leading the market is that various brand are using this platform and help Android to grow customer loyalty.

  3. I agree with both Sudhi and Vincent. According to the article "Android Invasion" I read in the latest Newsweek, high-tech researcher IDC forecasts that by 2014 Android will have 25% market share in smart phones, more than double Apple's 11% share. I'm not sure whether Apple will have the biggest market share in tablet market in the future since the first Android-based tablets are already on their way will begin to ship later this year.

However, I think Google and Apple are pursuing different strategies at the beginning. Apple uses closed platform to have tight control, delivering an exceptionally smooth user experience. Google uses open platform to trigger positive network effect, gaining bigger market share. Apple can price premium and have smaller customer base, while Google will price lower to penetrate bigger market. Maybe to some extent, they are both winners.
