Apps for Google TV
--
This video from Google about Google TV fits in with our discussions in class about the transformations underway in the media and entertainment space. This blogpost provides more details of the partnerships supporting Google TV.
The new link for Google TV is here.
This is definitely going to change the way people have watched TV till now. IT/Marketing at many companies heads may already be thinking of how to customize their websites for Google (and many more to come) TV. Google is a market leader in the internet advertising. If this becomes successful, Google can threaten the TV advertisement industry in a big way.
This is an interesting article from the WSJ about how Time Warner is strategizing to keep both its cable and online services alive but touches in a few different parts on the Google TV Strategy:
"Time Warner has been championing a model it calls "TV Everywhere," allowing cable and satellite subscribers to watch the TV shows they pay for in their traditional TV bundles online, free. "
"Monday, the company also endorsed the Google TV technology, saying it would optimize some of its television websites, including those of TNT, TBS and CNN, for viewing on TVs carrying Google TV."
"NBC Universal's CNBC network and the NBA also announced they would build Google TV software applications that provide access to content like financial news and sports scores."
Not only has Google done its homework bringing broadcaster and application provider on board, but also well known computer hardware manufacturer Logitech. Logitech, who already made a first move into the living room with its Harmony remote controls, revealed the Google-TV powered Revue box (http://venturebeat.com/2010/10/06/logitechs-google-tv-powered-revue-up-for-pre-order-today-299-99/) and Google and Logitech apply Apple-like product announcements - just presented and already up for pre-order. However the price point of $299 is above the Apple TV but bundles in a Harmony like remote. Application platform battle - Round 2
