Question: Is it high time Apple involves in the Health Sector?

We know both Google and Microsoft are making significant investments in IT for Health Sector. While their penetration seem to be very limited right now (with proprietary EMR systems still enjoying largest share), both Microsoft and Google are poised to take over this sector by creating ecosystem which integrates their smartphones, tablets, operating systems, docs with Microsoft Healthvault and Google Health, respectively.

What about Apple now? Should it involve or is Apple just fine with this products that only target individual consumers? At a time where Android overtook iPhone in market share, I think this is a very important question for Apple. As popular as Windows is with individual consumers, majority of the revenue for Microsoft comes from enterprises. We all know Apple missed the enterprise boat with the Mac and how remained a small player in computers. Will not focussing on the Health Sector yield a similar result as ignoring enterprises?

Thoughts?

  1. While software/technology giants like Google and Microsoft may be able to tweak their devices and/or websites to serve the growing "telemedicine" needs of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers to some extent, I feel the high switching costs involved in a change in health care IT infrastructure may prevent them from capturing a large piece of the market. The sensitive nature of the information that is stored makes this an even bigger issue. Cerner Corporation and McKesson Corporation are presently the leaders in the healthcare IT/telemedicine arena and are forecasted to remain so for the near future. However, as always, it will remain interesting to see how Microsoft, Google, Apple and others do to gain a foothold in this industry.

  2. I think either Google or Microsoft are mainly focusing on Hospital Information System. They try to create a flexible and powerful platform to efficient communication and information sharing between patients, doctors, and nurses. How could pharmaceutical companies, for example, Johnson & Johnson, Philips Health-care, and BMS, get benefit from the new technologies? Do they need update IT infrastructure?
