It is almost a year that Google has entered into the energy sector but it is still fascinating when you think the rationale behind it. Obviously, Google sees a huge opportunity in a world which is increasingly becoming energy conscious. It also has a lot to do with regulations that this administration is trying to begin. I expect a lot of products like Google power meter and smart grid trial programs to be introduced in the near future. How companies like Opower, who specialize in these products react, will be fascinating to see.
Another fascinating thing about google entering this sector is how it sees an opportunity in handling and providing power to servers. These servers are one the biggest cost center for any organization and google would like to manage them better.
It is also a GREAT goodwill branding strategy as the world is looking upto Google in the clean energy sector.
