Google v. Facebook

I found an interesting article that interweaves (in a way) last week's session and this coming week's session. Google has been making acquisitions behind the scenes in an effort to launch a social networking aspect to its already expansive web presence. However, as opposed to launching one site, Google plans to incorporate social networking aspects to many of its existing applications. It should be interesting to see if this takes off.

You can read the article here.

  1. Interesting! I wonder if they're doing it in pieces like this so it seems less redundant with Facebook? I know that I was definitely unwilling to jump on with their comprehensive social networking products, because I didn't see the point in replicating my facebook account.

  2. Here is another excellent link which discusses Google vs. Facebook: http://www.allfacebook.com/the-center-of-the-google-vs-facebook-war-the-like-button-2010-08.

The "like" button for websites coming from Facebook may replace the link as a voting mechanism, and introduce a social element to search. Google has tried and failed with social media before (Wave was recently cancelled), so this an area where Google is relatively weak.

It seems like all of sudden Google has multiple legitimate competitors on different fronts!
